{"id":1299,"date":"2018-08-21T20:23:58","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T20:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sdi.thoughtstorms.info\/?p=1299"},"modified":"2018-08-21T20:23:58","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T20:23:58","slug":"microsoft-adds-python-to-excel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sdi.thoughtstorms.info\/?p=1299","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft adds Python to Excel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several years late, it seems M$ is <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.slashdot.org\/story\/17\/12\/15\/1133217\/microsoft-considers-adding-python-as-an-official-scripting-language-in-excel\">considering<\/a> making Python native to Excel.<br \/>\nI wrote a &#8230; you guessed it &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/What-would-be-gained-from-Microsoft-adding-Python-as-an-official-scripting-language-to-Excel-given-that-pyxll-already-exists\/answer\/Phil-Jones\">Quora answer<\/a> as to why this makes sense for Microsoft.<br \/>\n&#8212;-<br \/>\nPython has become massively popular with the data and machine learning communities in the last few years.<br \/>\nTools like JuPyter are increasingly popular and serious interfaces for data-modellers who previously would have used Excel.<br \/>\nIt absolutely makes sense for Microsoft try to embed Excel and itself into that emerging Python data ecosystem by making Python a first-class citizen (ie. default, guaranteed to be there) of Excel.<br \/>\nNot just a third-party add on for those who know about it and can make the effort to install it.<br \/>\nNot only does Python need to be standard within Excel, but access to pip and all the Python libraries needs to be there too. So that Excel becomes the equivalent of <a href=\"https:\/\/anaconda.org\/\">Anaconda<\/a><br \/>\nThat\u2019s the way that M$ can keep Excel relevant in the new data age.<br \/>\nThis is not only a good idea for Microsoft. It\u2019s the difference between Excel remaining a major player in data modelling and analysis tools, vs. declining into obscurity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several years late, it seems M$ is considering making Python native to Excel.
